Economic financial design input
The number of Dutch elderly population older then 65 years will increase enormously in the coming years. Due to the good living environment and current medical care, the elderly are getting older and older. The Dutch salary of staff is high and because the state is responsible for a large part of the care costs, it is important that the care buildings are designed with efficiency in mind. So that care can be provided safely with short staffing lines, double use of space’s and smart lay out of floor plans, so the need for less staff and cost are the result.

The impact and the need for social interaction
Cities are becoming larger and more complex, the social network and community strength is becoming less tight. The children have less time to look after the parents. About half of the elderly community in the Netherlands are lonely, this has major consequences, it increases the risk of depression and other physical complaints. 14% of these elderly people die earlier.

Innovation and technical development
Home automation, also known as home automation, is all about the combination of technology and services in the home. This combination leads to a better quality of life and living. Well-known examples of home automation are the smart thermostats and wireless lighting systems such as Philips Hue. Supervisory home automation creates a safe environment with a lot of freedom of movement for your clients. Use lifestyle monitoring, for example. Sensors allow you to monitor clients’ lifestyles – how they move, sleep – and quickly discover changes.

Designs for the future
Because we cannot predict whether there will still be a need for special homes for dementia in the future. Perhaps a medicine is invented that can prevent the disease, a new requirement is set in the Netherlands with regard to the maps for heavy-duty units. In the future, these must be able to be transformed into normal homes for families.

Evelien Van Veen is BNP design partner and elderly care project expert. She is a known leader in the field of elderly housing in the Netherlands, a member of the National Planning and Construction Policy Committee of the Netherlands, and a former director of the Urban Planning and Construction Approval Committee in the Netherlands. With many years of experience in elderly building design, extensive professional resources network, and comprehensive experience in the development process of elderly housing projects.
