THE BUND, MONTESSORI SCHOOL, GRONINGEN

To improve the planning situation in the Beijum district gave the Municipality of Groningen command to move the seventies Montessori. The new school was built parallel to the channel. The historic dike along the canal, most eye-catching scenic element is by Drost + van Veen architects integrated into the design of the school. The corridor, which occupies an important place in the Montessori education, follows the ridge profile and forms the backbone of the building. Several areas, such as work stations, library and teachers room, collars on the dike.Subtle rotations in these areas create long sight lines across the canal. The large hall is open to the sunken playroom. This allows the hall can also serve as a stage with the audience in the playroom. An eight meter wide staircase rises to the dike along the floor, and also serves as a seating object. The school is the new iconic building of the Beijum district. The school’s exterior received a fresh look. The color white dominates and contrasts with the somber, gray-brown hues of the surrounding buildings. The facades to the school to get a ‘warm’ wood trim.
