The Nature recreation center De Oostvaarders is on the edge of the Oostvaardersplassen, on the north side of Almere. The area is one of the most unique natural areas in Europe. To appeal to a wide audience the Oostvaarders accommodate an information center, a restaurant, a classroom (the play and doe’ space), a bird-watching area and a representative space: the calling card of the region. The building is realized at the meeting point of landscapes with a different character: land, water, forest and reed beds. The building is both, as the dike surrounding the lakes. The Oostvaarders shows itself in two forms. There is an inviting side; seen from the parking lot serves the building as a vertical beacon that rises from the flat land. From Oostvaardersplassen the camouflaged side, the building presents itself horizontally and thus connects to the vast embankment. The entrance is at the bottom of the embankment. On the dike level, visitors can enjoy stunning views over the ‘savannah of the North’ with Heck cattle and Przewalski horses.
